Lightning Strike -- Mammoth Cabin

This past Saturday a cabin past the fish hatchery in Hatch was struck by lightning just after 8 am. Panguitch Fire and Hatch Fire responded to the fire.

Lack of water supply was responsible for the lost of the cabin. Water shuttling could not supply the firefighters with enough water, fast enough to extinguish the fire. On arrival the basement of the cabin was fully involved.

Firefighters, attempting to access the building, sounded the floors and ceiling as they entered. Because the entryway floor was covered with tile, it was difficult to determine the structural soundness of the floor. However the entry team noticed that there was extreme heat on their knees coming from the tile. They quickly recognized this warning signal as an indication that the basement was already burning and that the floor could potentially soon collapse.
